Let’s Call It a Day
Welcome to my first post for November 2021!
The year is almost up which means it’s time to really get out there and try get some more images for my top 5 of 2021. There’s a few images I wanted to take the past few days but either didn’t have the time or the weather didn’t permit. Here are my images from the past fortnight.
Different Views
Below is a view that’s featured a lot in my images. I’m usually shooting it at 35mm or longer so this is one of those rare times I get to use something wider, namely 16mm. It’s been nearly one year since I owned such a wide lens so it’s going to take some time before I’m used to this focal length again.
During the week I took that photo, there was some nice storms hence why the sky was so crazy. I didn’t think of it at the time but I really should have taken something more close up too with the 85mm or 100-400mm.
Below are some more images I took around Market City here in Sydney. I used the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 as a bit of a way to compare it against the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 as a way to see how nice the Canon renders images. The first two photos are with the Canon and the third is with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 back when I had my A7III.
For me personally I find the Canon to have really good rendering that to my eye renders very similar to the Sigma, which is 2/3rds of a stop faster. Of course some may feel different and have their own preference but if I was to not label which image was taken with what, would you notice a difference?
That’s a Wrap
I have now taken enough photos with my RF 50mm that I can finally finish off my review. I’ve written a good majority of it but still need to finish off a few things and record the audio version. Before I had more still life based photos but wanted some more people based images as a lot of people use this lens for portraits.
The first two images below were taken at Steam Mill lane which is near Darling Square here in Sydney. It was really good to see it busy again on a weekend and all these struggling businesses finally recovering after being closed for so long.
As we were eating I took the opportunity to take these images which is quite a good spot. The laneway has a nice background and with so many elements to it there is a certain level of depth. If I had a 135mm or 70-200mm I’d love to shoot here with a fast lens from far away. If I ever own another 85mm f/1.4 I’ll be sure to visit here.
Next up is the image below which is a self portrait I decided to take one evening. I didn’t have any real proper portraits with the RF 50mm which is a popular use for this lens. I had just finished shooting cityscapes, lighting was nice and I had some time to spare so decide to shoot this.
I’d be wanting a new self portrait for my display pictures for some time so it’s good to finally be able to update it. I really like the 50mm focal length now and this lens is really enjoyable to use too. Now if Sigma release a 50mm f/1.4 DN Art in RF mount that’s small like their old EX lens that would be hard to resist.
The image below and the one at the very top of the page were the main reason I went out that evening and it was definitely worth it. I had scouted this spot weeks ago but was waiting for the right weather to go out. When it comes to the image below, it was one of the first images I took when I got there. It was a 270 second exposure with a 10 stop ND filter.
I didn’t even edit this image at first but decided to see how it would look and it turned out to be my favorite one. The image at the very top of the page I took a bit later once the sun was going down more and the building lights were starting to come on. I like the sunset light of the earlier image better but both have a certain appeal to them.
The 50mm focal length worked so well here and the RF 50mm f/1.8 shows it can be more than just a budget lens. Well that’s it for this post, I hope you enjoyed it and make sure to subscribe below if you want to be notified of future posts.
