A little over a week ago I got myself the Viltrox 50mm f/2 Air which is my first lens from this brand and I can confidently say, it certainly won’t be the last. Viltrox have obviously been around for some time now but I never really considered one of their lenses for some unknown reason.
Viltrox lenses felt like what Sigma or Tamron did back in the DSLR days where you know IQ was likely decent but autofocus was a bit of a grey zone. Their lineup keeps growing and at a fast pace too, they appear to be expanding their lineup much faster than other brands have been which is impressive to see.
Above you can see the Viltrox 50mm f/2 lens in all its glory. The lens itself is nice and small, it’s light but doesn’t feel too cheap. The Sigma 50mm f/2 does have a more metal premium build but also costs roughly 3 times the price of the Viltrox if you can get it on sale so that is understandable.
I had been considering getting the Sigma again as I felt it was a lens I sold too quick but once I seen the price and images from this Viltrox, I figured it was worth trying.
Below are some images I took at Gyukatsu Kyoto here in Sydney with my a7V and the Viltrox 50mm.
Majority of these shots were all wide open or near wide open. The autofocus is a bit slow although I found accuracy to be quite reliable but I’m also shooting static objects so take that as you will.
Below are some more images taken at dinner which had a bit more of a low light environment.
So far I would say this lens is well worth every cent I paid for it and I can’t wait to use it more. This also opens up the option to other Viltrox lenses as ones like the 135mm Lab has been something I’m interested in although the weight is the main thing that makes me reluctant along with the price.
Prior to using this lens I questioned how good the 135mm Lab could be despite all the positive reviews but now I’ve used a Viltrox lens, I’m definitely a convert.
Thanks again for reading and enjoy your weekends!
